Jay Leno is a well-known comedian and former host of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Jay Leno Show”. Leno is car lover and owns approximately 169 cars. It’s no surprise that with such a love for cars he hosts a web and TV series “Jay Leno’s Garage”. The show is in its 3rd season and consists of Leno reviewing some of his own cars and other cars that he has an interest in.
There is one car that featured in an episode of the show that I was very interested in and couldn’t resist talking about. Leno had the chance to drive Divergent Micro factories’ 3D printed Blade supercar.
The episode follows Leno driving the car and chatting to owner and creator of the car Kevin Czinger. Czingers hopes were to change the way the automotive industry worked by establishing “micro factories” essentially cutting down shipping time and costs. Divergent Microfactories seem as if they may be one step ahead of the game in the automotive industry as they can already see the benefits of 3D printing and are using it in their day-to-day operations.
Packing a 700 horsepower Mitsubishi Evo engine and weighing only 1,400 lbs the blade has a top speed of around 200 mph and can go from 0-65 mph in just 2.5 seconds.
Whilst I’m more excited about the fact the car was designed and created using a mix of additive manufacturing, computing power and material sciences, Leno claims “ It’s a lot of fun to drive” and he tests the car on the streets of L.A.
